Chemical Reactions
Chemical Reaction/Changes
2 types- Physical, Chemical; Physical-The appearance changes. (melting, freezing, change in size or shape)
Chemical- occurs when the atoms making up matter rearrange to form a new substance with new properties.
EVIDENCE OF A CHEMICAL CHANGE
Evidence What you might observe
Production of Gas Bubbles, foaming, smoking, odor, fizzing
Color change- *NOT ALL COLOR CHANGES ARE CHEMICAL* A different color appears
Formation of a Precipitate Cloudiness, Foggy, solid at the bottom of container
Change in heat or light energy Temperature increases or decreases, sparks, explosion, glowing
THESE ARE ONLY CLUES
A chemical change has not actually taken place unless matter has changed into a new substance.
Examples- Rusting, Tarnishing, Burning, Cooking, and Digesting. If you have the CHEMICAL EQUATION, you can tell if a chemical change has taken place by looking to see if the products in the equation are different from the reactions.

Nuclear Chemistry
Nuclear energy can be harnessed to produce lots of electricity, and when protons and neutrons get directly involved in reactions and their numbers do change, huge amounts of energy can be released. When these changes happen to the nucleus of an atom we rather logically call their study: Nuclear Chemistry. Changing one Element to another, or changing one isotope to another are known as transmutation.
Stability, as with all other living things on Earth, want nothing more than to be stable.
When a nucleus decomposes in this way to form a different nucleus that's Radioactive Decay.
Half life tells us the time it takes for exactly one-half of the sample to decay.
TYPES OF RADIOACTIVE DECAY
-Alpha Decay
-Beta Decay
-Gamma Decay
-Spontaneous Fission- An atom simply breaks into two smaller atoms without any outside help.
